The equation
Net worth is assets minus liabilities. Assets may include cash, savings and investments. Liabilities include debts and obligations. The equation is simple; its value comes from updating it consistently over time.
Negative is information, not a verdict
A negative number does not automatically mean failure. The useful questions are whether debt is falling, savings are growing and your position is improving compared with previous months.
Avoid false precision
Not every possession needs to be counted. Focus on meaningful assets and liabilities that can be estimated reasonably. Too much detail can create work without improving your decisions.
Track direction, not status
Use net worth as a private progress metric. Compare yourself with your previous position rather than with someone who has a different income, age or starting point.
