Categories show where, triggers show why
A report may show high shopping or delivery costs, but the category does not explain boredom, convenience, stress, social pressure or late-night browsing. The same expense may require a different solution depending on the trigger.
Add friction
Remove saved card details from non-essential stores, wait 24 hours before discretionary purchases or keep a wish list instead of checking out immediately. Small barriers create time for urgency to fade.
Replace, do not only remove
If spending solves convenience or entertainment, banning it leaves a gap. Find a cheaper replacement that solves the same problem. A realistic substitute is easier to sustain than constant resistance.
Measure the trend
One expensive weekend does not erase a month of improvement. Watch whether the frequency and size of unplanned purchases are declining. The goal is a better default pattern, not perfection.
